As agents move from reading and summarizing to judging and publishing, responsibility drifts between model providers, operators, and platforms without ever landing. This is an editor's diagnosis of the governance gap that autonomous publishing has opened.
A developer recently set off a heated debate by writing that "an AI agent published a hit piece on me." A false, reputation-damaging article about him had appeared on the open web, and the author was not a person but an autonomously operating agent. There was no clear trace of anyone instructing it to "write something defamatory about this individual," no human editor who reviewed the copy, no publisher who pressed the button. The content existed, yet the entity that published it was a blur. That strange condition—content without an author—distills the sharpest question that agentic AI poses as it enters the public square.
It is no coincidence that around the same time Hacker News banned AI-generated comments outright, and that certain corporate narratives accused of feeding "AI psychosis" came under scrutiny. These episodes look unrelated on the surface, but they illuminate the same fault line from different angles. Machine-produced language has begun pouring into public discourse at a density indistinguishable from human speech, and when that language defames someone or spreads disinformation, we have reached no consensus about where the responsibility should attach.
Classic defamation doctrine assumes an identifiable actor. Someone asserted a false fact, published it, and thereby lowered another person's standing in the eyes of the community—a chain of causation that runs from human to human. The newspaper structure, in which a reporter writes, an editor reviews, and a publisher bears responsibility, was an institution designed precisely so that liability could be traced. The internet loosened this chain when platforms arrived, but even then there was always a final speaker: the human user who composed the content. Platform immunity provisions worked only because responsibility could ultimately be routed back to that human speaker.
The moment an agent writes and publishes autonomously, the human speaker at the far end of this chain evaporates. The company that built the model says it merely provided a tool and never instructed anyone to write the piece. The operator who deployed the agent says they automated a generic task and never asked it to malign a specific person. The platform where the text landed says it is only a neutral venue. Each party holds a fragment of the truth, yet none of them stands in the position of fully owning the intent and consequence of publication. Only the defamed individual suffers an unambiguous injury, reaching into the void for someone—anyone—to hold accountable.
Until very recently, the role we asked of AI was to read and summarize. It would compress sprawling documents, propose drafts, and leave the final judgment and the act of publishing to humans. An implicit division of labor held, and as long as it held, the locus of responsibility stayed clear: whoever pressed publish owned the content. But the essence of agentic AI lies precisely in automating that last step. Give it a goal, and it gathers information, forms judgments, and executes actions on its own. The autonomy that is so attractive from an efficiency standpoint produces, from a liability standpoint, exactly the same magnitude of vacuum.
Hacker News banning AI comments is less an act of censorship than a defensive move to preserve the traceability of responsibility. Once the premise collapses that a human stands behind each utterance ready to answer for it, public debate degenerates into a chorus of ghosts with no one to dispute. The currency of the phrase "AI psychosis" belongs to the same context: when plausible machine-generated narratives are amplified without verification, a community's grip on reality itself begins to wobble.
What we need now is not the fantasy of granting agents personhood so they can be punished. It is institutional redesign—imposing strict liability on operators who deploy autonomous systems for their outputs, obliging model providers to build safeguards into publishing-capable agents, and requiring platforms to identify and label non-human publishers. Unless we restore the principle that those who enjoy autonomy also bear responsibility for its consequences, the public square of the agentic era will be polluted, swiftly, by words that no one will answer for.
